Soul music began in the African American community in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Soul is a combination of gospel, blues, jazz and rhythm & blues.

Motown represented the clean cut and acceptable acts in order to attract the white teen market. The music was bouncy, catchy and had a pop-oriented sound. The Supremes. Four Tops. Smokey Robinson. The Temptations.

The straight up soul artists at Stax / Volt records in Memphis represented the blues shouters of the Deep South. Otis Redding. Sam and Dave. Isaac Hayes.

All of these styles formed soul, the ruler of the black music charts in the ’60s and a frequent cross over into the pop charts. At the end of the ’60s, soul began to splinter, as artists like James Brown and Sly Stone developed funk, and slicker forms of soul. The evolution of Soul is infused in the R&B of the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s.

Michael Jackson. Booker T. Brothers Johnson. Commodores. Drifters. Earth Wind & Fire. Aretha. Marvin Gaye. Whitney Houston. Isley Brothers. The Jackson’s. Rick James. Gladys Knight. Kool & The Gang. Pointer Sisters. Prince. Lou Rawls. Diana Ross. Spinner’s. Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. Temptations. Ike & Tina. Sly & The Family Stone. War. Jackie Wilson. Bill Withers. Stevie Wonder. And so many more…..
